This week I focused on light statery. Light strategy is a very important part of.a project as it affects people, animals and other light sensitive species.
Light is linked to the movement of bats residing around Galleons Reach as the majority of the site is completely dark. This makes it the best roosting area for bats and other nocturnal animals.
Considering this, it is important to factor in the placement and type of lighting as we do not want to disturb their way of life as this could negatively affect them.
My lighting strategy is to add censored lighting at selective times. During the summer when sunlight goes down around 9pm, the censored lights would go on after that time. And in the winter when the sunlight goes down earlier, the lights would go on around 4pm.
I want to ensure that any lights put in are sensitive to the bats and other wildlife that reside in the area. In order to do this, I will implement a period of time where the lights will be turned off or will emit ambiet red lighting instead of the standard white light. Bats are significantly less affected by red light compared to white or UV light so using this will allow them to forage, hunt and continue their way of life as normal.
Denmark and Netherlands have successfully switched some of their street lights to emit red lights in order to protect bats and lower the number of bat deaths.
